Bryson Dechambeau takes bitter swipe at the PGA Tour after being banned from pre-Ryder Cup tournament
Bryson DeChambeau has taken a bitter swipe at the PGA Tour after being blocked from playing in a crucial Ryder Cup warm-up event. The LIV Golf star, who's all but guaranteed a spot on Keegan Bradley's Ryder Cup squad, expressed frustration Friday over the ongoing restrictions placed on players who defected to the Saudi-backed breakaway league. It comes as U.S. captain Bradley eyes the PGA Tour's Procore Championship, scheduled this autumn in Napa, California, as an ideal opportunity to get his team some live tournament reps. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler confirmed that he intends to play, with many of his likely teammates also expected to tee it up in support of Bradley's plan. DeChambeau, however, remains ineligible due to his PGA Tour suspension. 'That's up to the Tour and their decision to make,' DeChambeau told Sports Illustrated after carding a 4-under 67 in the opening round of LIV Golf Indianapolis. 'It's on them if they don't let us become together as a team and play.' The comments come amid tensions between the breakaway LIV contingent and the PGA Tour, which has suspended players like DeChambeau since defecting in 2022. Despite ongoing merger talks and broader calls for unity across the sport, the Tour has shown no sign of softening its stance - even with the Ryder Cup just weeks away. DeChambeau would require a sponsor's exemption to compete in the event, but according to a PGA Tour spokesperson, that won't matter. They told the outlet that the two-time US Open champion 'is not eligible for PGA Tour competition.' The Procore Championship, played in the five-week gap between the PGA Tour season and the LIV schedule ending, has been identified by Bradley as an ideal opportunity to get his players in sync ahead of the biennial clash with Europe. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler said Wednesday he plans to play, and several other likely Ryder Cup selections are expected to join him in Napa in a show of unity and preparation. That leaves DeChambeau, one of the in-form Americans this season and a confirmed part of Bradley's Ryder Cup plans, on the outside looking in. While DeChambeau has made no official request to play, Bradley's agent Brett Falkoff told SI that the 30-year-old 'plans to participate in every team gathering that he is permitted to attend.' But unless something changes fast, he could be the only American team member not competing in the Procore tune-up - a glaring omission in an otherwise united front. The PGA Tour's ongoing hardline stance on LIV players continues to ripple through professional golf - and now, potentially, through America's Ryder Cup campaign. Whether that costs Team USA on home soil remains to be seen. But for DeChambeau, the damage may already be done.

Tommy Fleetwood confident leading from front at FedEx St Jude Championship
Tommy Fleetwood views his previous near misses on the PGA Tour as a positive as he again put himself in position to win at the halfway stage of the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis. The Englishman takes a four-shot lead into the weekend after a second-round 64, which included four successive birdies from the 13th, after three in a row from the second, with his only bogey coming at the last after driving into a bunker. Fleetwood is still searching for his first PGA Tour victory in 161 events, having finished runner-up six times. The last of those came in June at the Travelers Championship when he looked like breaking his duck until a three-putt at the 72nd hole handed United States Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley the win. 'It hasn't happened for me yet out on the PGA Tour but I would much rather be up there and not quite get it done than not there at all,' he said. 'Who knows, maybe this weekend is the weekend and we'll see, and we'll crack on from there. 'I'm happy to put myself in with a chance over the weekend. I think that's exactly where you want to be and keep testing yourself.' Fleetwood leads from fellow Englishman Justin Rose, who is trying to play his way into automatic Ryder Cup qualification as he currently sits two places outside of not needing a pick from captain Luke Donald, two-time major winner Collin Morikawa and Akshay Bhatia. Rose has two holes to play when he returns to the TPC Southwind course on Saturday morning after lightning forced an early suspension. World number one Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Open and US PGA champion, is six off the lead in a share of seventh. Ludvig Aberg, a debutant in Rome two years ago and one behind Rose on the European list in ninth, shot a second successive 67 to sit a shot further behind, with Matt Fitzpatrick, currently 12th and still needing to convince Donald of his selection, on two under after a 71. Viktor Hovland, however, is still struggling for form with a two-under 68 only moving him to two over. Bradley, 10th on the United States' Ryder Cup list, is on the same score with five holes remaining as his hopes of playing his way onto the team on merit and becoming the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963 took a hit.

Tommy Fleetwood fires second round 64 to take commanding lead at FedEx St Jude Championship
Maybe Tommy Fleetwood is about to crack the code, after the Englishman – who has yet to win on the PGA Tour – fired a superb second round 64 to claim the midway lead on 13-under-par 127 in the FedEx St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. Competing in his 162nd career event on the PGA Tour, Fleetwood – who agonisingly lost out to Keegan Bradley in last month's Travelers tournament – moved closer to finally achieving a win on the US circuit with a round of seven birdies and a lone bogey, which came on his finishing hole where his drive on the 18th found a fairway bunker. In temperatures approach 40 degrees, Fleetwood got on hot streaks on both sides: he ran off a hat-trick of birdies from the second to the fourth and then produced four-in-a-row coming home, from the 13th to the 16th to claim a four-shot clubhouse lead over Collin Morikawa. 'For the most part I've been very good off the tee, put myself in position to have a go at the course. My iron play has been good and solid, and I've rolled the ball well. The greens are really true and I've had a nice eye on the greens and good reads and rolling it well. I think still you've got to focus on the good stuff and try and keep that going. We'll see,' said Fleetwood. In the Nexo Open on the DP World Tour at Trump International Aberdeen, Scotland's Grant Forrest shot a course record 66 for a midway total of seven-under-par 137 to claim a one-stroke lead over England's Jordan Smith. Conor Purcell, the only Irish player in the field, carded a 72 for 145 to lie in tied-25th headed into the weekend. In the Irish Challenge at Killeen Castle on the Hotelplanner Tour, American Matt Sharpstene – looking for his maiden win on the circuit formerly known as the Challenge Tour – shot a 66 for seven-under-par 137 to hold a one-stroke lead over Oihan Guillamoundeguy and Stefano Mazzoli through 36 holes. Jonny Caldwell (72 for 142 in tied-17th) was best of the Irish with Alex Maguire and Robert Moran (143, tied-26th), Liam Nolan (144, tied-41st) and Max Kennedy, Paul McBride, Jack Madden and Liam Grehan (145, tied-57th) also surviving the cut into the weekend. On the Ladies European Tour, Germany's Laura Fuenfstueck and Virgin Island's Alexandra Swayne shared the first round lead after opening rounds of six-under-par 67 in the PIF London tournament at The Centurion Club. Annabel Wilson, with a 71 (tied-15th) was the best of the Irish players competing.
